Padma Awards 2011: IT Head Honchos get recognition

New Delhi: Azim Premji, Chairman, Wipro; S (Kris) Gopalakrishnan, CEO & MD, Infosys; Rajendra S Pawar, Chairman, NIIT Technologies and Ajai Chowdhary, co-Founder, HCL are the IT industry leaders among the Padma awards announced on the eve of the Republic Day this year. While Premji has been conferred the nation’s second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, others have been awarded the Padma Bhushan.

On receiving the Padma Bhushan award, Kris said, “I am thankful to the government for this recognition. I am also thankful to the leadership and my colleagues at Infosys, without whose support I would not have got this award”.

Padma Awards, the country’s highest civilian awards, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year. The awards are conferred by the President of India at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhawan sometime around March / April.
