Kochi: Kerala will have a brush with the Silicon Valley culture with Freeman Murray, a legendary entrepreneur, angel investor and mentor from the US, announcing that he would set up a start-up school for young entrepreneurs in collaboration with Startup Village, India’s first telecom incubator.

Murray’s Startup School, the first of its kind in India, will come up at Startup Village in Kochi in partnership with the Startup Village and Jaaga.in, a hub of digital creativity in Bangalore supporting designers, start-ups, and digital freelancers of all types.
 
Freeman said the school would enrol 100 students initially for a six months course of which four months would be devoted to residential class at the Startup village campus from which the brighter ones with better ideas and entrepreneurship skills would be selected for the final two month course. Preference would be given to those with better communication skill with a good command over English which, he said, is essential to be successful in this sector. He also added that the Kerala government was extending a lot of support to technology companies to grow in the State.

“The Startup School is a large-scale initiative to help young first time entrepreneurs in India launch successful Internet companies. It’s a great time to start a technology company. The Internet has made it possible for smart people everywhere to create products and earn money online,” observed Murray, who has been working with technology start-ups for the past 15 years in India and the US.
 
In India, Murray had earlier run an incubation programme at IIM Ahmedabad. He has also set up a large art and technology space in Bangalore called Jaaga.in. Since 2000, he has been an active angel investor for over 20 companies in the US and India.
 
“Murray’s decision to launch a start-up school for young entrepreneurs is going to be a momentous event in Kerala. It has also to be viewed as the next logical step to the landmark Student Entrepreneur Policy, which has been promised by the State government,” said Sanjay Vijayakumar, Chairperson of Governing Board of Startup Village.
