Kochi: Kris Gopalakrishnan, who co-founded Infosys as a start-up years back to trigger an IT revolution in the country, has hailed India’s first telecom incubator Startup Village as a major turning point in the development sector of Kerala. Kris, who is also the chief mentor of Startup Village, was speaking after inaugurating India’s first incubator on public private partnership mode, at Kinfra Hi-Tech Park in Kochi. The incubator aims to groom 1,000 start-up firms over the next 10 years.

Terming the establishment of Startup Village as a milestone, he said many were yet to take note of the transformation happening in Kerala. “Many refused to change their perception about the State even after Kerala made a successful model through its Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram. What a start-up venture requires is a very conducive atmosphere that will improve confidence and drive in new ideas”, he said. Lacking of funding is another hassle on the way of entrepreneurship. This incubator has a solution on this count, he added, affirming that it would mark a beginning of a transformation in Kerala.

P H Kurian IAS, Principal Secretary (IT), GoK assured full support by the State Government to the project and said no bureaucratic hassles will trouble the start-ups. Affirming that Kerala has a favourable atmosphere to make fast strides, he said the momentum will further pick up if the circumstances are made better.

Alkesh Sharma IAS, MD, KSIDC & Secretary (Industries) pointed out that no man-days were lost due to any reasons in the last one year in the State. However, many have not realized this factor and the Government is planning the global investors meet, Emerging Kerala, in September to highlight these changes in the investment sector.

Dr Ramachandran Thekkedath, VC, CUSAT; Dr. Ravi Pillai, the leading NRI entrepreneur; Dr B K Shukla, DST; S Ramnath, MD, Kinfra and K Nandakumar, CEO, SunTec were among those present on the occasion.

Startup Village is being set up jointly by up by the National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB) under the DST, GoI and the Kerala Government run Technopark, in collaboration with MobME Wireless.
