Kochi: The final decision of the proposed SmartCity project in Kochi would be taken soon based on the outcome of legal opinion on Tecom’s reply letter. This was stated by the Fisheries Minister S Sarma today, who is also the Chairman of the SmartCity Kochi Board.
Tecom the promoters of SmartCity Kochi, was served a letter by the State government to explain the delay in commencing the project and also to confirm their commitment to the project. In his reply, Tecom CEO Abdul Rahman Fareed had said that they were ready to go ahead with the project if there is an assurance on the freehold land as per the conditions laid down in the original framework agreement.
But the Minister’s statement today gives a clear indication of the government's action plan that they are not willing to entertain the demands of Tecom. He termed the reply filed by Tecom as a breach of contract as these claims are not part of the initial contract. Tecom’s reply has been referred to legal experts and their opinion would decide the final course of action.
In an earlier letter to Tecom, the Kerala Government had made its position clear that it cannot wait indefinitely for the project to begin. The grant of 12 % freehold rights to SmartCity has been the contentious issue between the State Government and Tecom. Meanwhile, the next Board meeting of Tecom is scheduled for June 28, 2010.
