SmartCity Kochi Board meeting on June 28

Kochi: The next Board of Directors meeting of the SmartCity Kochi project is set for June 28, 2010 at the Ramada Hotel in Kochi. The last meeting of the Directors Board of SmartCity Kochi was held on March 29, 2010. The last meeting, held as required under the statutory requirements of the Companies Act, discussed audit reports and the fine points of government intimations. The meeting did not take any decision on outstanding issues, including the right to freehold land for the promoters.

The forthcoming meeting will be held in the backdrop of Fareed Abdul Rehman, CEO of Tecom, the promoters of the proposed SmartCity Kochi clarifying that they haven’t stepped back from the much delayed project. They were still hoping that the Kerala Government would express their willingness to hold talks with the company. He had also said the company was prepared to launch the construction work soon if all the conditions in the framework agreement including the Special Economic Zone notification, registration of lease agreement and stamp and registration duty exemptions were met.

Recently, Kris Gopalakrishnan, CEO & MD, Infosys who was in Trivandrum in his capacity as the Chairman of CII, Southern Region, had commented that the inordinate delay in the SmartCity Kochi project was sending wrong signals about Kerala’s image across the world. According to him, there is no debate about the need for SmartCity. Kerala needs several such projects like the SmartCity to come up so that there is competition and there are multiple opportunities for businesses to invest.
