IIITM-K logs on to its own campus in Technopark Trivandrum

Tvm: The Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management - Kerala (IIITM-K), an autonomous institution under the Government of Kerala, has got its own campus now. The new campus in Technopark, Trivandrum, built at a cost of Rs.7.5 crores, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Shri Oommen Chandy on June 06, 2012. Since 2000, IIITM-K had been functioning from the Nila building in Technopark campus.

The new campus comprises 35,000 sq. ft. built-up area, which affords enviable facilities for an IT institution including high end computing facilities for learning and research.  Centre for Excellence in Machine Intelligence, Virtual Resource Centre for Language Computing, Centre for Intelligence and Security Informatics, Advanced Lab Infrastructure for Embedded Systems, Computational Sciences, Medical Image Computing, Information Systems and Services with emphasis on e-Governance, are few activity areas housed in the new building.

In his address, the Chief Minister informed that the Government has also allocated 10 acres of land in Technocity for IIITM-K. The Government intends to create a world-class campus to enable IIITM-K to establish itself as a premier institution of national importance for post graduate and doctoral studies in IT and related areas.

Minister for Industries & IT, Shri P K Kunhalikutty said that there is a dire need for a re-look at the entire Technical and Higher Education system of our country. He drew attention to the fall in quality of education in the recent past, increasing demands of high quality and skilled manpower in the Industry, lack of good communication skills among the students community, mismatch between quality and quantity, etc. He stressed that institutions like IIITMK have a greater role to play in enhancing the quality of education and also the levels of employability of students.

K Jayakumar IAS, Chief Secretary, GoK; P H Kurian IAS, Principal Secretary (PWD & IT); Girish Babu, CEO, Technopark and Dr. Elizabeth Sherly, Director, IIITM-K were present on the occasion.
