Datawind partners with GetJar, big bonanza for Aakash tab users

New Delhi: DataWind, a leading provider of wireless web access products and services and the inventor of the world’s least expensive tablet computer, ‘Aakash’, has announced their partnership with GetJar to pre-install the GetJar app store on all Datawind tablets giving all Datawind customers access to download their choice of thousands of free applications.

GetJar’s app store offers customers access to over 3,50,000 free applications, many of which users would have to pay for in other app stores. GetJar accomplishes this through an advertising-based model having developers pay for placement of their applications subsidizing the consumer’s costs. This is especially important in markets like India where online payment methods are unreliable and grossly unavailable.

In a release, Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO, DataWind said, “GetJar is an established partner with a very large selection of free applications that users can download onto their UbiSlate or Aakash tablets. We’re excited by the added value this brings to our end users.”

Chris Dury, CEO, GetJar added, “Low-cost tablets open the capabilities of applications and the Internet for millions of people. We are happy to help Datawind make free applications and our GetJar Gold program available to these new tablet customers.”

Apart from Aakash, DataWind’s product range includes the PocketSurfer handheld internet device, UbiSurfer netbooks and UbiSlate tablet devices. Datawind was recently named the UK’s Most Innovative Mobile Company.

GetJar is the world’s largest independent app store, with over 2 billion downloads to date. The company distributes more than 350,000 mobile applications for Android from over 395,000 registered developers. TIME named GetJar one of ‘10 Start-Ups That Will Change Your Life’.
