Kerala to complete UID enrolment within a year

Tvm: The Kerala Government has decided to enrol all the residents of the State under the ambitious Unique Identification (UID) programme of the Central Government within a year. This was announced by Chief Minister Shri Oommen Chandy today.

Briefing the media after the weekly Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister said, “If everything works out according to the plan, the enrolment would be completed in the next one year and Kerala can have the distinction of being the first State in the country with 100% enrolment”.

Aadhaar, the UID project was launched in Kerala on February 24, 2011. Launching the project, the then Chief Minister, Shri V S Achuthanandan had said that the enrolment for Aadhaar would be voluntary in the State. But today, talking to Kerala IT News, Shri Oommen Chandy clarified that the enrolment would be mandatory for all. “Full enrolment would enable the State to get many benefits from the Central Government and the citizens would be able to take the maximum advantage from these schemes. The UID project would also help us identify the real beneficiaries of such schemes”, he added.

The UID enrolment which is presently being done in two districts will be extended to all the 14 districts in Kerala. Akshaya, IT@School and Keltron are the enrolment agencies. The Cabinet has also approved Rs.1.4 crore as administrative cost in implementing the project. An amount of Rs.49.5 crore will be paid @ Rs.150 per BPL family for enrolling in the UID programme. All these expenses will be reimbursed by the Central Government over a period of three years.

The UID enrolment in Kerala was delayed because of the dispute over the use of proprietary software by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). Kerala is the first State to implement Aadhaar using Free and Open Source Software (FOSS).
