Tvm: All school students in Kerala will be getting the Unique Identity Number, as part of the UIDAI (The Unique Identification Authority of India) initiative of Government of India, within this academic year itself with the help of IT@School Project. Thus Kerala will become the first state in the country with all the students having the ‘Aadhaar’ number.
The Government of Kerala has set up a Cabinet Sub Committee under the Chairmanship of Chief Minister of Kerala and a State UID Implementation Committee under the Chairmanship of the Chief Secretary, Kerala to oversee and guide the implementation of the Unique ID number in the State. Akshaya, IT@School and Keltron have been identified as enrolment agencies.
12,000 + schools in the state will be considered either as separate units or as clusters to enrol for getting ‘Aadhaar’. IT@School will deploy its own School Management System to capture necessary details.
According to K Anvar Sadath, Executive Director, IT@School, “Even though the ‘Aadhaar’ demands information on Name, Gender, Date of Birth, Address as mandatory details (called KYR - Know Your Residence details), we’ll be collecting other necessary details like Class name, Admission Number, Local Body etc. from the students. From this database, the KYR (mandatory) fields will be filtered to a separate software provided by UIDAI.”
Upon registering for ‘Aadhaar’, students will go through a biometric scanning of ten fingerprints and iris. They will be photographed and given an enrolment number upon completion. These data will be subsequently uploaded to the UIDAI central server and then students will receive the Aadhaar number within a month directly by post.
Unlike normal practice, IT@School is capturing the necessary details well in advance through the free software based school management software, before the biometric details capture. Schools can schedule time for class wise enrolment of students. So we’ll be able to avoid the data entry delay and can make maximum enrolment per day.
IT@School is planning to complete the enrolment process for all students (60 lakhs) before March 31, 2011. “Besides providing Aadhaar Numbers, we are trying to give physical identity cards (with photographs) to all students along with this, even though it’s not a part of UIDAI project. UID Authorities have informed that the scheme was tested successfully in some schools in Bangalore. IT@School will pilot this in two schools in October 2010”, adds Anwar.
UIDAI was established in 2009 by the Government of India, with the developmental mandate of setting up the infrastructure to provide a universal way of uniquely identifying Indian residents. This is in the form of Aadhaar, a 12-digit unique identification number (UID) that will be provided to an individual. The number will be stored in a centralised database and linked to the basic demographics and biometric information - photograph, ten fingerprints and iris - of each individual.
